Chandrayaan-3 mission: Pragyan rover overcomes first challenge
Chandrayaan-3’s rover ‘Pragyan’ crosses 100mm crater. As soon as this happened, the scientists sitting in the ISRO control room in Bangalore heaved a sigh of relief. Right now the rover has to deal with many challenges.
- According to Chandrayaan-3 project director P Veeramuthuvel, there are several steps involved in moving Pragyan from point A to B on the lunar surface.
- For planning each route, data from the onboard cameras is downloaded to the ISRO Control Center in Bengaluru. A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is created from this data.
- The ground and mechanism teams then decide which path to take and command the rover to follow.
- There are some limitations to rover movement. Each time the navigation camera sends a picture, a DEM of up to five meters can be created.
- This means that whenever the command to move is given to the rover, it can cover a maximum distance of five metres.

- According to ISRO, the payload ChaSTE (Chandra Surface Thermophysical Experiment) mounted on Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander has sent its first observation by measuring soil temperature around the South Pole to understand the thermal behavior of the lunar surface.
- ISRO senior scientist BHM Darukesha told that our estimate was that the temperature around the surface would be around 20 to 30 degree Celsius, but it is 70 degree Celsius. Not only this, the variation in temperature is also quite interesting.
- He told that at a depth of 2-3 cm on the earth, there is hardly a difference of 2-3 degree Celsius in temperature, whereas on the moon it is close to 50 degree. It keeps increasing as we go deeper and according to our study so far it ranges from 70°C to -10°C.
- The ChaSTE payload has been developed by a team from the Space Physics Lab of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center with the help of the Physical Research Lab, Ahmedabad. The payload has a temperature measuring device. It can reach a depth of 10 cm. It has 10 temperature sensors.
